Chinchero Maras Moray

Chinchero Maras Moray

This tour includes a visit to three tourist destinations in the area around Urubamba. The first stop is Chinchero, at a Textile Center run by the local communities. Next, we will visit Moray, a striking archaeological complex made up of overlapping farming terraces that form part of a large agricultural laboratory. Our last stop will be in the town of Maras to visit its famous salt mines, consisting of over 3,000 pools that are fed by a saltwater brook. The intense sun then causes coarse salt crystals to bloom before being harvested by hand.

The tour includes a visit to three tourist attractions in the region, located near the Urubamba Valley.

Chinchero - Textile Center
Our first stop is the town of Chinchero, located 30 km (18.5 miles) from Cusco, famous for its archaeological center and for its textiles, recognized worldwide. There, we will visit a cultural center, which has been established to ensure the survival of textile traditions and provide support to families from the communities that run the project. This recently inaugurated center is located at the top of a hill, from where we will have views of the wonderful landscape, the archeological center, and part of the original Inca Trail that passes nearby. This unforgettable experience will include an opportunity to see Peru’s native camelids, observe a demonstration of authentic textile arts, and learn about different ancient Andean customs and traditions that continue to be practiced to this day.

Moray Archaeological Center
Our next stop is Moray, a formidable Inca archaeological complex consisting of circular, overlapping terraces that were used as a “laboratory” for agricultural experimentation. The terraces reproduce the climate conditions found in different ecological zones throughout the former Inca Empire.

Maras Salt Mines
Last but not least, we will make a brief visit to the town of Maras before continuing to the famous salt mines, made up of over 3,000 pools connected by a saltwater stream that feeds them. Under the intense sun, coarse salt crystals are left behind for harvesting. Here, we will learn about the production and extraction process behind pink Maras salt, renowned the world over for its medicinal properties.

After finishing our visit, travelers will be returned to their hotels in Cusco.
